BBQ

We were feeling a little homesick today, and decided to go in for some BBQ. Although we weren't hopeful, we were pleasantly surprised by what we found. The joint called Memphis Minnie's was a real find. It is located at Haight and Fillmore, and ain't much to look at. But hot DAMN that was some good BBQ. The owner came by and chatted with us a bit, and got excited when we told him we were from Austin. We had noticed the Hoovers t-shirt on the wall, and he proudly told us that Mr. Hoover was a good friend of his. Small world! We told him that we fully approved of his brisket and sauce (which has a pleasant touch of cumin), and he admitted that it was indeed a Texas sauce (with a hint of Stubbs). We will surely return when Texas BBQ calls us...

For those who can't wait to see pics of our new place, your anguish is over. There are some new photos in our San Francisco album, including:

The house our apartment is in.

The main room.

It's a small place, but very charming (and expensive!). As you can see, our furniture has not arrived yet, so we are living on the floor. Thank goodness we had access to an air mattress!

SF Internet service

To all in the Bay Area:

We are moving into our new place in San Francisco, and we need internet service. Although I love cable internet, we do not need cable TV. However, I am addicted to broadband. So, does anyone here have a recommendation for good broadband internet service? Think fast/cheap balance.

Thanks.

Apple Man

Good news...I am now an Apple employee! I was offered the job today. I will be working in the Apple Store in downtown San Francisco, one of Apple's flagship stores. Yes, I will be but an humble cashier to start, but I'm okay with that. I'm sure over time I'll take on other duties. The important thing, of course, is the Apple employee discount.

PS. I couldn't have gotten the job without [info]ph0s. Thanks, bro!!

Small SF update

I'm now into the second week of school. While I'm looking forward to the classes, we haven't really got into any of the meat yet. Also, many of the readings so far contain some degree of Freudian psychoanalysis, which grates on my nerves to no end. In every other scientific field, you can be reasonably sure that the professional schools will be teaching up to the date theories and knowledge. The fact that this comparatively ancient, well-debunked theory is still taught boggles my mind. I have no patience with drivel about the anal stage of development or the Oedipus Complex. Arg! However, this being CIIS, I'm sure we'll eventually get on to other theories, and I'll be happy again.

In other news, we still have no place to live. We found two places that we really liked today in our search, and hopefully our credit isn't too terribly stinky (they all check credit history here). Stay tuned!

Otherwise, we are really starting to get to know the City pretty well. The bus system is now pretty well understood, and we can get around pretty good. I would say that we've visited about 30%-40% of the major neighborhoods, and we're getting a good bead on those. We saw the Castro briefly for one of Sandy's job interviews. All the chunky gay guys I expected...the large number of little ol' ladies was more of a surprise.

Sorry, no new SF photos. However, there is a bunch of SWL photos I've put up. A couple of the pics aren't mine originally, and I can't remember where I got them, so if the original pic takers want them down, let me know. However, I wanted these folks in my album, and I don't have any other shots of them. So, thanks, whoever you are.

End of report.
